The New Guard is inviting
original, previously unpublished work in fiction or poetry
for the contests below. Writers could win $1,500 and
publication in The New Guard Volume V. Selected
finalists will also be published. The entry fee is $20.
Work submitted for either contest must
be previously unpublished and submitted in .doc or similar
files. No PDFs. Multiple and simultaneous submissions are
accepted. Contest winners and all finalists get one free
copy of The New Guard. Each submission is
considered for publication, and final judging is blind.
$1,500 and publication for an
exceptional work of fiction in any genre. Submit up to 5,000
words: anything from flash to the long story. Novel excerpts
are welcome if the excerpt functions as a stand-alone story.
Judged by Adam Braver.
Knightville Poetry Contest
$1,500 and publication for an
exceptional poem in any form. Three poems per entry. Up to
150 lines per poem. Judged by Roger Bonair-Agard.
Bang!
Short work in fiction, nonfiction and
poetry is also accepted year-round via BANG!
Bang! authors are showcased individually
online for thirty days. Each author installment is made up
of three pieces in any combination: poetry shorts (20 lines)
or fiction or nonfiction (500 words each). Three prose
pieces, for instance, could total 1,500 words max. Bang!
pieces are not published in The New Guard. Work is
meant to be very short – flash short – so that the pieces
on Bang! serve as a kind of calling card for the author.
Bang! instalments run from the 20th to the 20th
of every month. Bang! submissions are accepted year-round. Submissions are $20.

articles of interest, as well as the most important
aspect: the poetry.
A Swift Exit
will also be publishing books of poetry in both print
and ebook format. Calls for submissions will be posted
