Additional informationAccepting short story submissions for our themed anthology to be published in October, 2009. Please, hardcopy submissions only. Standard professional manuscript format (double-spaced, one-inch margins, name and story title on running header, etc.). Other specs below:
Theme: Well disguised mainstream dark fantasy ... in other words, stories that appear to be mainstream but subtly veer off into some speculative realm, such as a brush with the supernatural, or some other fantastical happening.
Remember, "subtle" is the key word here. We're looking for stories that appeal to both mainstream and genre readers ... stories where maybe very little is as it appears on the surface. Please, no science fiction or hard-edged horror, nothing too over-the-top New Age. If you want examples of what we're looking for, read:
THE FIFTH HARMONIC by F. Paul Wilson
THE VALLEY OF LIGHT by Terry Kay
THE SNOWFLY by Joseph Heywood
THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN by Mitch Albom
FOR ONE MORE DAY by Mitch Albom
THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold
THE SHACK by William P. Young
If you relate better to movies, then think THE SIXTH SENSE.
Story Tips: Your story will have a better chance of making it into the published book if you incorporate the following elements:
Stories that take place after dark
Some type of bird (preferably a nightbird, but it can be any bird)
Music references (any style, but please, no rap or hip-hop)
Strong romantic interest at the heart of the story
Of course, these are just tips to help you hit our hot buttons, but really, do your own thing. With so many short fiction markets now closed, the competition is sure to be fierce, so send us your best, most imaginative work.
Payment: .01 cent per word payable on acceptance (after writer approval of galley proof) plus two contributor copies of the anthology, payable on publication. Writer retains reprint rights after publication. Top runners-up will have their stories published on our Website.
Word Count: Maximum of 5,000 words
